Naturally Soothing a Sore Throat Tea Recipe

I had strep throat two weeks ago. It was pretty terrible so I went into the doctor. They swabbed my throat, confirmed it was strep then sent me off with a prescription and strict instructions to take all 10 days worth of the medicine. Spoiler alert: I lost track after about a week. I was feeling fine and just forgot (FYI THIS IS BAD. DON’T DO THAT. LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTOR.) Anyways fast forward to now, and not only has my husband gotten strep, but I believe I’ve been re-infected by him. This led to him asking me to make my “tea” to soothe his throat. I realized I haven’t ever written this down before. This “sore throat tea” is simple, natural, delicious, and effective.

The sore throat soothing tea is made of only three ingredients: honey, fresh ginger root, and fresh lemon.

The ginger and lemon must be fresh. No substitutes.

I would recommend a local honey if possible, but understand sometimes this can be $$$$. Use what you can afford. Always.  I am quite generous with the lemon and ginger. I used about 2 tbsp of fresh ginger, 1 lemon, and 6oz of honey. Next time I will be getting a large container of honey like {this 32oz bottle for $11}.


  1. Peel the ginger. Mince into small bits.
  2. Wash the lemon (skin on) and dry off. Chop into small bits. Don’t get worried about seeds, it isn’t a big deal.
  3. Get a small container, put the ginger, lemon, and honey into the container and mix.

To drink:

  1. Boil water
  2. Use 1tsp-2tbsp of the mixture – this is very much a personal preference. My husband likes a lot of the tea, I prefer a smaller amount.
  3. Pour hot water over the tea and stir
  4. Drink for a soothed throat!
    I store my  sore throat tea in the refrigerator. You can continue to add in additional ingredients as needed.
